A Little Visit Of Drag in Mexico Moment- Jesus

A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY: IS DRAG IN MEXICO HARDER THAN THE US? IS THERE MORE VIOLENCE OVER THERE ? WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRAG IN US AND MEXICO? The answer is YES!.

Back in the 90’s there were big influencers that motivated other future drag queens that started their careers. Francisco del Carmen Escalante “Francis” was an actor and vedette in Mexico. He always wanted to be an actor but he didn’t know what type of actor until he put lashes, wig, and heels on, he started to like that and continue with it. Through out the months, she made her own show called “El show de Francis” where it got bigger and really famous. Even though a lot of people liked it, other people hated drag that never stopped her from doing what she did. Another two big influencers are Oswaldo Calderon and Daniel Vives “Las Hermanas Vampiro” that were also actresses from the 90’s.

The big question is: Why not 90’s and not early?

From my experience and also from drag queens that have talked about their experiences, I can say that they started on the 90’s because Mexico has been so close (homophobic). In the article “Mexico First Drag Reality Shows Confronts a Macho Society” talks about it’s a country where you can be killed for dressing outside your gender norms, “To put on a wig and heels in Mexico can be a suicidal act, given all the feminicides here. They are facing up to this machista (macho) society”. I find this article, perfect for my explanation about machism. Yes! Close in terms of theres a lot of machism that theres been throughout the years. A lot of parents are born from ranches, which means that the men have to be a man and act like a man and that woman have to be a woman and act like a woman.

An Important video "The History Of Drag In Mexico" they all talked about each other experiences of becoming a drag queen. From what I have been noticing is that drag queens have been more emotional than the one from the US and I feel like is because theres a lot of them that they dont have support from the parents and also because of "machismo". I really like how one of them talked about how she loves that her mom supports her! I can say that i really relate to her in terms of also having support from my mom and I think that is all we need!

HOWS THE POLITICS IN MEXICO?

In this book called "Sexual Diversity, Discrimination and Violence" it talks about how in Mexico drag queens have a problem with their citizenship and their human rights. This reminds me of the show in Netflix called “The House of Flowers ” were there is a lot of drag performers living in Mexico and they want to change their picture and name for their ID since they have a new names now. Also from what I have seen from the film is that there is drag queens that they want to work in a normal job and people don’t hire them, just because they are drag queens and form part of the LGBTQ community. According to the book "Sexual Diversity, Discrimination and Violence" it says: "On May 17, 2016 in Mexico City the forum "Homophobia, Transphobia, Human Rights” was held, convened by the CNDH with the participation of a wide range of activists, civil society organizations and researchers whose work is related to sexual diversity and discrimination in Mexico. Results of several studies were presented at the forum recent reports on the situation of the LGBTIQ community in the country”. There has been a lot of protests against homophobia but in my point of view is that it always starts from US!! We are the ones that can support and be there for each other. There has been a lot of people that have been supporting and fighting for their rights like Manuna and Margaret Y Ya where by just for her custom and giving some hints that there was going to be a show called La Mas Draga.

There has been a show going on called "La Carrera Drag De La CDMX". This show was made it from the idea of Rupauls Drag Race. In this show, local queens participate and show their creativity and win a crown. Later on "La Mas Draga" started their show and posted their videos on Youtube.

BUT WHY IN YOUTUBE AND NOT IN TV LIKE HERE IN THE US?

Here is where the politics have a lot to do with it! From what it seems is that even though the president says he makes laws and all of that is not really true. Since Mexico is so close a lot of people would hate watching a drag show!! The only thing that has been showing in the tv is the march for LGBTQ but thats it! and I think that there should be showing in the tv a lot of LGBTQ shows, movies etc.

Exactly on August 13th of this year a beautiful handsome angel named Jonathan Santos was killed in Guadalajara Jalisco. He was in a party that night with his friends. When he went home he got killed outside!!! And the reason was because he was gay. In the last five years around 381 LGBTQ people got killed. There has been a lot of fear from the LGBTQ community. If they are ready to go to a performance as a drag, they always their car or order a car like uber because THEY ARE SCARED OF GETTING KILLED!

The locations that drag queens perform are located in Mexico City, since every year they do the LGBTQ Pride Parade in downtown these are some locations that they go and perform:

  • BATACLAN

  • CABARETITO NEON

  • KINKY BAR

  • FAT CROW

There are always going to be a hard life for them and specially because a lot of them live in Mexico City. A lot of them dont show fear even though they are SCARED. The most amazing thing is that they are not scared of being who they are! and I can say that they are my inspiration. I know that they will keep fighting for their equalities and they will keep doing amazing and one day, they will be travelling the whole world! NOTHING BUT SUCCESS!!
