William Dorsey Swann - Drag History - Giovanna Martin
This project was done for the Spring 2021 semester. I did a video about the history of Americas first Drag Queen! :) Citations https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Dorsey_Swann https://rediscovering-black-history.blogs.archives.gov/2020/06/29/william-dorsey-swann-the-queen-of-drag/ https://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/teck-frontier-mine-medical-assistance-in-dying-1990s-mls-wilson-cruz-the-first-drag-queen-and-more-1.5477892/america-s-first-drag-queen-was-a-former-slave-and-lgbt-rights-crusader-says-historian-1.5478181

ManBoob presents: R U Mad?
This performance to "R U Mad?" by Michael Blume featuring Shea Couleé and Peppermint was inspired by one of my favorite pieces of drag herstory: the 2017 hit song C.L.A.T. I wanted to create three different looks that were inspired by different styles of drag makeup, and for each look to meddle with gender in different ways. The first look is feminine and whimsical, mostly inspired by my own style and gender expression. The second look is more masculine and inspired by the more abstract and artistic side of drag. The third look is meant to be a marriage of typical drag queen makeup with the added pizzazz of typical drag king facial hair, because I liked the idea of pairing a hyperfeminine outfit with a gendernonconforming face. This felt like the perfect way to wrap up a semester that has taught me so much about my own gender expression as well as the culture that has shaped so much of our LGBT culture and history!

I chose to perform Mariah Carey's iconic, All I Want for Christmas is You because I wanted to get into the holiday spirit, and what better way to do it? I really enjoyed putting on the drag makeup and getting my outfit together. I was inspired by 80s and 90s drag looks, thin brows with lots of blush. However, I felt odd performing, mostly because I was performing to know one in my parent's suburban home. Despite this, I still had a lot of fun lip-syncing and dancing around in my drag look. It was a really positive experience that let my embrace my femininity.
