Maebe A. Girl - First Elected Drag Queen (Alex Bianchi)

Maebe A. Girl is an American drag queen and politician. She is the first drag queen to ever be elected into public office. Maebe A. Girl is currently serving on the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council in Los Angeles, representing Region 5. Maebe also recently ran for congress in the 2020 election but she conceded to Adam Schiff. Maebe is responsible for forming the Silver Lake LGBTQIA Advocates Committee, which is the first committee of its kind in the Los Angeles Neighborhood Council system. Maebe also serves as one of the Homelessness Liaisons for the Council, interfacing between the Council and the Homelessness Committee. She has worked as an overnight supervisor at a homeless shelter, and wanted to address the homelessness crisis, supporting LGBTQIA rights, and protecting immigrants. She recently voted in favor of submitting a Community Impact Statement to LA City Hall to address homeless encampment clean-ups and to support a study of the efficacy of current clean-up efforts. Maebe also still does drag shows around L.A. while also completing her public office duties.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that when I was doing my research there were not many negative opinions on her and I couldn’t find any public figure saying something negative about the fact that she is a drag queen. Granted this is in California, one of the most liberal and welcoming states, but it’s so refreshing to see a drag queen being taken seriously and not just sued for a punchline. I sat through multiple of her videos, interviews, public speeches, and town hall meetings and she is very passionate about helping her community. She wants to defund the military and defund ICE. She is a progressive democrat and uses her platform to promote equality.

She uses the word “protect” very heavily in her campaign. She explains that protection is for the marginalized communities. She wants to protect women, the LGBTQ community, minorities and the environment. She believes representation matters and wants these voices heard. She relates this to her being a drag queen in a really interesting way. Maebe says that doing drag is already very political and she is surprised she is the very first drag queen elected into public office considering most drag queens are big activities in their communities. She says it’s important for all perspectives and viewpoints of life to be validated and when only one group of people hold power in office it can create unfair legislation.

Growing up as an openly trans drag queen, Maebe has faced discrimination across the country. Not being accepted and being isolated from the public has inspired her to pursue her career in politics. Her platform stands for a more loving and accepting America. Volunteering and working for the public and her community for most of her life, Maebe has grown a huge supportive following. People see that she cares not only for gay community but also wants to support all underrepresented communities.

It’s 2020 and we are living in a new society. I am not sure if a drag queen could have been elected into office even 10 years ago. People would have used the idea that she was openly trans and a drag queen to isolate themselves from her and put her down for being different. Now those traits that make her different are the ones that make her stand out in a positive light. As society progresses and we become more accepting to other outlooks on life, we can start to make progress that matters.

The reactions to her elections and campaigning for congressional office have all been mostly positive. She has a few celebrity endorsements that include Grimes, Sarah Silverman and William Belli. The LA and Californian community also has supported her in her campaign. There aren't any negative ads or people talking negatively about the fact that she is a drag queen. The most refreshing part is when she is giving interviews and they ask about her being a drag queen but they don’t make that the only point about her career. She is treated like a normal politician and not as a drag queen politician which is extremely important in equality.

Her future plans are to address issues like gun reform, prison reform, green new deal, medicare for all, and affordable education. She will most likely run for congress again next election with a bigger platform.
